Job summary We are seeking to appoint a fixed term Locum Consultant Spine Surgeon to our department for 12 months. The post holder will have at least one year specialist fellowship experience in spine surgery. We welcome applications from orthopaedic and neurosurgical spine surgeons. The post holder is joining a team of 3 orthopaedic spine surgeons supported by extended scope practitioners in their out-patient activity. A weekly spinal MDT takes place. The 3 orthopaedic spine surgeons currently all contribute to the general orthopaedic trauma workload and on-call rota also. It is envisaged that at some stage in the future a separate spinal rota may be introduced. Our spine surgeons interface with the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre and participate in their MDTs also. Some of the elective non-instrumented surgical activity performed by the successful post holder may need to be undertaken at SEOC. Main duties of the job Working collaboratively with the other consultants and wider multi-disciplinary team within Trauma & Orthopaedics, the post-holder will: - Contribute to the further development and improvement of the spine surgery service within the Trust, to improve the timely management of patients with spine injuries/ pathology and increase the resilience of the service. - Participate in morning trauma meetings to share knowledge and contribute to senior consensus decision making. - Participate in the consultant on-call rota (if qualified to do so), taking responsibility for all patients admitted under their care and ensuring timely senior assessment and decision making to facilitate appropriate investigation, prompt management and early discharge. - Work collaboratively with the Spine surgery MDT and the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre to ensure optimum and safe care delivery for these patients. - Conduct regular ward rounds for in-patients, ensuring handovers during planned absences and covering for colleagues when needed. - Undertake at least 2 out-patient clinics per week and help contribute to the strategic objectives of increasing new patient episodes and reducing unnecessary follow-up where appropriate. - Undertake a combination of emergency and elective operating lists across our on-site main theatres and also at the Sulis Elective Orthopaedic Centre, Bath.
