We have three postnatal bays and one antenatal bay. There is a maximum of 24 ladies on the ward. Each bed has a buzzer system.Other rooms include, clean utility for equipment, dirty utility / sluice room and waste disposal, resource room / paediatric roomThe role of a Wharncliffe Volunteer is based on the following principles:Maintain respect for the individual and dignity of the patients and their relativesWork under the guidance of trained staff on the wardCommunicate with the midwife responsible for the care of the mother and babyBe aware of the importance of confidentiality and infectionSecurityThis is a secure ward with an entry system for access.Please do not allow entry for anyone, always check with a member of staff and be aware of tailgating when you are moving in and out of the ward. There can be safeguarding issues on the ward and visitors may need to be monitored.Patient InformationVolunteers are not expected to have access to the patients records (except feed charts). If you are asked to deliver or collect a file from another area, please be aware that you are holding confidential information which should not be read or left unattended.Main duties of the jobWith direction and support from staff, you maybe asked to undertake the following:When a new patient arrives on the ward make sure they have a full water jug and glassKnow the ward layout, can reach their buzzer and know how to use itHave a visiting cardSupport patients with meals and refreshmentsRespond to the buzzers and assist the patient if it is within your role outline. If further assistance is needed please speak to the Midwives, Health Care Assistant or the Nursery NurseAssist patients who need help cutting food and opening packets, putting butter on bread etc.Volunteers should never help patients to eat (assisted feeding).Collect meals trays at the end of the mealSupport staff with ward housekeepingRefill the linen cupboards in the baysHelp staff to make and tidy beds on the wardHelp to keep the ward generally tidyHelp to clean tables of empty milk bottles and dispose of themTake prescriptions to the PharmacyTake urgent samples to PathologySupport the ward clerk to make up postnatal discharge packs, C section packs, induction packsStamping envelopesVolunteers should not carry out any duties, that have not been clearly explained or previously demonstrated.HoursMonday Sunday AM or PMPlease do not apply via NHS Jobs.
