Liverpool Clinical Laboratories (LCL) is seeking to appoint a substantive Advanced Practitioner Healthcare Scientist (Histological Dissection) within LCL. This is an excellent opportunity to join the largest provider of specialist histological pathology services in Cheshire and Merseyside. The successful candidate will be a registered Biomedical or Clinical Scientists with a significant background in histopathology dissection and hold an IBMS Advanced Specialist Diploma (ASD) in Histological Dissection. We are seeking a strong leader with attention to detail and an innovation mindset. Candidates who do not hold an ASD (dissection) are encouraged to apply and, if successful, will be supported to complete the portfolio and appointed under Annex 21 terms and conditions. In addition to the dissection role, candidates will be responsible for leadership and management for the dissection and specimen reception services in collaboration with a team of Expert Practitioner team leaders. Advanced Practitioners undertake a wide range of complex scientific procedures which result in the correct interpretation of biological samples. Their decisions contribute to the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases, including cancer, and the investigation of other pathological processes. They dissect the full range of histological specimens from all specialties (Category A-E) as required, and competent. In addition to their dissection role, the successful candidate will take responsibility for the management of the specimen reception and dissection laboratories, ensuring effective processes are in place to provide timely specimen flow and the highest quality service. Together with a team of expert dissectors, the post holder will be responsible for ensuring quality practices are adhered to in line with ISO15189 and ensure training for biomedical scientists and laboratory technicians is prioritised. Additionally, the post holder will collaborate with our consultant pathologists to assist with the training of medical specialist trainees where appropriate. Play an active role in the service’s training and education programme 1. Plays a lead role in co-ordination and management of collection of tissue for research purposes. Scope of Clinical Practice 1. Independent interpretation of macroscopic biopsies and surgical resections (both benign and malignant) from the relevant specimens within the agreed scope of practice 2. Provides independent expert opinion to clinical colleagues to enable management of patient care and provides expert opinion to medical colleagues to determine treatment of patients. 3. The dissection knowledge and skills of this post is equivalent to a qualified Consultant Histopathologist and the Advanced Practitioner will be expected to be working to current Royal College of Pathologists best practice guidance. Person Specification Qualifications 1. IBMS Advanced Specialist Diploma in Histopathology Dissection 2. IBMS Diploma of Expert practice in Histological Dissection 3. HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist 4. MSc (or equivalent) in relevant specialty 5. Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science 6. Post-graduate management qualification or equivalent experience Experience 1. Minimum 48 months dissection experience including benign and malignant resections 2. Competency assessments for RCPath specimen types (Cat A-E) in relevant specialties demonstrated 3. Evidence of training Biomedical Scientists and junior medical staff 4. Experience of leadership and management within a Pathology setting 5. Evidence of comprehensive CPD portfolio in relevant specialty 6. Up to date knowledge of Royal College of Pathologists guidelines for specimen dissection 7. Up to date knowledge of evidence based national and international patient care pathways 8. Understanding of Health & Safety requirements in laboratory 9. Understanding of up to date UKAS/ISO15189 or equivalent standards for medical laboratory accreditation Skills 1. Advanced macroscopic tissue recognition and dissection skills 2. Evidence of ability to order appropriate ancillary tests (e.g. secondary decalcification or fresh tissue collection for Whole Genome Sequencing) 3. Able to produce high quality macroscopic descriptions for clinicians in all Trusts in a timely fashion meeting departmental KPI’s 4. Autonomy in dissection of comprehensive range of surgical specimens (Category A-E) 5. Able to manage and prioritise workload. 6. Assessment of the suitability of set procedures for any given specimen and using judgement to carry out alternatives. 7. Able to organise own workload and do so under pressure. 8. Able to obtain appropriate biological control material, use of other specific control measures where appropriate and complete the validation of such material. Other 1.
