Job summaryJOB TITLE: Junior Clinical/Education Fellow - Education and Emergency Medicine.NUMBER OF POSTS: 2 postsRESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Undergraduate Education/Clinical Director for EDLOCATION: East Lancashire Hospitals NHS TrustHOURS UNDERTAKEN: Full timeJOB TYPE: 12 month post to commence 7th August 2024The RoleThese unique posts provide rich opportunities to develop interests and expertise in medical education whilst broadening your clinical experience.We have a vacancy for two Junior Clinical/Education Fellow to commence July 2023 for 12 months.The posts will 50% educational and 50% clinical service provision (clinical attachment in ED) and you will work 2 six month rotations split between clinical and education duties.Funding will be made available for the successful applicants to complete a medical educational qualification (if undertaking the role for a full 12 months only) if candidates do not already have this qualification. The qualification and higher education institute where this will be undertaken will be determined by the Trust.Main duties of the jobClinical Role - Junior Clinical Fellow in ED (50% of time per candidate)The main responsibility will be to provide appropriate care for the various patients who attend the Department. This will vary from providing;Immediate resuscitation for seriously injured and seriously ill patientsAssessment and immediate care for other emergency patientsReferring patients to the appropriate specialty for admission or referral to out-patient clinics, such as Fracture Clinics, or referral back to the General Practitioner.Education Role - Junior Clinical Fellow in Education (50% of time per candidate)The Department of Undergraduate Education [DUE] at ELHT sits within the Directorate of Education, Research and Innovation [DERI]. We have a proven track record of providing high quality clinical education and training.These will be multi-professional sessions and will span a broad range of specialities and topics. Although we will look to utilise any special interests or knowledge, your education delivery will not be limited to any specific speciality.It is anticipated that majority of the post holder's role will be focused towards undergraduate medical students and physician associates in locality. Most ambulance attendances attend this site, and as a result the department receives one of the highest numbers of 999 attendances in the UK. The department sees a broad and diverse case mix including paediatrics.Emergency DepartmentThe main ED comprises 22 majors, 8 resuscitation bays and 4 rapid assessment cubicles with an adjoining Urgent Care Centre, which sees ambulatory attendances and is also staffed by the department. There is a second Urgent Care Centre 12 miles away in Burnley and there is a nurse-led minor injuries unit 5 miles away in Accrington.Job descriptionJob responsibilitiesDuring your clinical time:The Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine and Urgent Care will work on a shift system which varies according to a 16 week cycle. The contracted hours of duty shall be the standard working week of 40 hours and in addition he/she will be available for an additional 3 full shift hours (which includes 4 hours protected teaching).ManagementLiaising with GPs regarding their patients who attend the Emergency Department and Urgent Care Centres.Clinical Fellows appointed to the Department of Emergency Medicine should familiarise themselves with the Major Incident Plan and will be required to participate in any practice exercises.During your Education time you will contribute to clinical placements of all learners providing:Skills sessionsWard based supervision/teaching sessionsBedside teaching sessionsLecture and tutorial session (where required)Case presentationsCBL and/or PBLSimulation sessions (where required)ManagementWork with the education teams at ELHT and, where appropriate, from all our education partnersCollaborate and work closely with East Lancashire Primary Care educators where opportunities permitParticipate in appropriate curriculum committeesProvide leadership and oversight to the ELHT Foundation School Medical Undergraduate Teaching CommitteeLearning & DevelopmentNetwork with clinical staff to share best practice.Work collaboratively with the all Educators across the organisation to promote standardised training and educationAssist with the update of lesson plans and teaching resources to constantly seek to improve the quality of education through the use of evidence-based practice, liaising with professional colleagues, reviewing literature and evaluating feedbackDevelop evaluation methods to assess the impact of education on patient careDeliver programmes of learningSet up and maintain equipment for teaching sessions, as requiredProvide constructive feedback to learners on their performanceProduce regular reports and audit data on progress to the Clinical Education Lead which are clear, fluent, concise and easily understoodActively promote equal opportunities for access to learning & development to all staff from all backgroundsAct as a member of the education team with attendance at relevant meetings, as directedAs a student supervisor, your role will be to oversee your student(s) progress during the module and provide feedback both verbal and written.Professional Development, Supervision & SupportYou will be provided with an enthusiastic named educational supervisorYou will participate in the agreed personal development and appraisal planThe candidate will complete a postgraduate certificate in medical education or other similar educational qualificationYour role will be a 50:50 split between education and clinical activities and this includes annual leave & study leave entitlements. As you will work 6 months on/off, your holiday & study leave entitlement should be taken, where possible, equally over each 6 month rotation between clinical and educational duties. In addition, you will accrue leave for bank holidays.
