Job summaryThe purpose of this post is to augment and support the general Upper GI service for the residents of Gloucestershire. As a senior employee of the Trust the post-holder will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust's patients.Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:-o To ensure the provision of a first class clinical serviceo To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialtyo To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriateo To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policieso To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's and Division's services planso To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Surgical Division or the TrustThe appointment to this post has three main aims:o To join a team that provides comprehensive consultant-based patient-centred management of upper GI patientso To share in a comprehensive rota for emergency and elective general and upper GI careo To contribute to the continuing development of the department's clinical, research and educational interests.The post-holder will be expected to contribute to a Consultant-led service.Main duties of the jobThe appointee will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high quality care to the patients presenting to the Departmento To examine and treat patients on the shop floor of the Departmento To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staffo To provide on call support out of hours. To attend the Department out of hours as per agreed protocols. To remain contactable and available when on callo To carry out ward roundso To provide conditions for improved training opportunities in line with national and local recommendations arising out of MMC and related requirementso To participate in the undergraduate teaching programme.o To assist and participate with the development of postgraduate training for F1s, F2s, Core Trainees, STs and other staff as appropriateo Where agreed, to act as Educational Supervisor to junior and middle grade medical staff, being responsible for their appraisal and personal development planning.o To promote evidence based practice. To respond appropriately to NICE guidance. To change own and others clinical practice in response to new clinical developmentso To undertake and supervise relevant clinical audit topicso To be involved in risk management and quality assuranceo To remain up to date and engaged in CME/CPD as per RCS guidelineso To respond appropriately to complaints and critical incidentso To take part in developing clinical audit in accordance with agreed Governance programmesAbout usThe appointed candidate will join a friendly, dynamic team, that provides comprehensive consultant-based, patient-centred management of Upper GI patients.The in-patient Upper GI Service is based at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital (GRH) alongside day-case and outpatient facilities. Outpatient and day case surgery are also offered at Cheltenham. Outpatient services are also provided at Stroud, Dilke, and the Vale. All specialist Upper GI in-patient and day care is provided on dedicated wards at GRH (Ward 5B / DSU). Emergency surgery is provided on ward 5A. In addition, benign upper GI and emergency surgery is managed in CGH (Tivoli / Dixton/DSU).
