Job summaryThe post holder will provide expert child protection knowledge and skills as part of the Community Paediatric Medical Service (CPMS) consisting of the Children Looked After Team, Child Protection Service, and Community Paediatric Service, delivering commissioned services in Southampton.To coordinate and assist in child protection medicals for children and young people who are suspected of neglect or harm. Medicals will be undertaken at Magnolia Suite, Southampton with the on call Community Paediatrician. The role will include supporting the Consultant with appropriate investigations and assessments. You will need excellent communication and negotiation skills to work with social workers, carers, parents and police during a highly sensitive assessment. The child protection service operates Monday to Friday from 9am -- 5pm, however there may be a requirement to work beyond 5pm to ensure cases are completed.You will need to have a Monday, Wednesday and Friday working pattern.You would be involved in giving the children a voice and attending ICPC to support evidence that you have been involved in.Main duties of the jobAccepting referrals following liaison with medical colleagues.Coordinate the timescales for the medical.Liaising with the multi-agency network and the wider medical team to book the appointment.To meet and greet the families/children/social workers at Children's Assessment Unit at Magnolia Suite.To provide nursing support for the Doctor during the child protection medical.Offer support and advice to professionals, children and families throughout the child protection process.Assessment and analysis of highly complex information that may be emotionally distressing and highly contentious.Management of highly charged emotional issues to identify risk to children.Knowledge and skills in recognising indicators of child abuse.Apply knowledge of child protection processes into practice.Specialist knowledge of forensic and children protection procedures to support the paediatrician and family during the assessment.To coordinate and manage follow-up assessments and investigations as required.Support any follow up responsibilities e.g., Child Protection Conferences or Strategy MeetingsTo promote effective liaison with professionals from health and other agencies at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.To use specialist clinical skills in assessing and analysing need, referring, and developing care plans for children and young people in complex situations.Attendance for peer review.Manage a team of health care support workers.About usWe have been working with other local NHS Trusts to create a new organisation, bringing together all community, mental health and learning disability services from across Hampshire and Isle of Wight.
