Job Description
An exciting opportunity at the Perse has arisen for a Teacher of Biology to start in September 2025. We are looking to appoint a high achieving scientist, on a one year fixed term basis, to join a supportive, energetic and collegiate department. The successful candidate will have a genuine enthusiasm for biology and be well placed to generate and sustain a high degree of motivation in all pupils, who are mainly of a high ability. Biology is a core subject alongside chemistry and physics. All pupils currently take three separate sciences to GCSE having completed a preparatory biology course in years 7 and 8. We follow the Edexcel GCSE course in the Middle School and the department routinely achieves outstanding GCSE results. Biology is a popular A-level choice with approximately 140 students choosing to study it in the Lower and Upper Sixth. Since September 2022 the department has been teaching the OCR A-level course, which is academically challenging and requires pupils to thoroughly develop their independent learning and questioning skills to achieve success. Practical work is an integral part of our teaching and all our laboratories are thus equipped to the highest standards. Students studying Biology regularly succeed in gaining places to read Natural Sciences or Biological Sciences at Cambridge and Oxford University. Many students use their biology in degrees such as Dentistry, Medicine and Veterinary Science. The Medical Forum and Sixth Form Biology Society provide extension material for students hoping to apply for these competitive degree courses. Public exam results regularly place The Perse in the top 20 schools nationally and in a typical year over 50 pupils will receive Oxbridge offers. The Perse enjoys a prestigious reputation and values a mixed approach to teaching and learning. We aim to respect tradition and innovation, industry and fun, and academic and personal growth. All teachers and pupils are required to demonstrate all-round excellence and contribute to the academic, pastoral and extra-curricular life of the school. At The Perse School, we value the well-being of all staff and offer a supportive environment that balances professional ambitions with personal growth, opportunity and work-life balance. Further details including how to apply can be obtained from our website via the 'Apply' button. Closing date: 12th May 2025 at 9.00am but applications will be considered as they are received; The Perse School reserves the right to make an appointment before the closing date. Interviews will be held on Tuesday 20th May. The School actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of society. Safer Recruitment The Perse School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post including: references from previous employers, a Disclosure and Barring Service check at the enhanced level, as well as eligibility to work in the UK (in compliance with UK immigration regulations). All work carried out at the School on a regular basis amounts to regulated activity. This role is also exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone's responsibility. The School is committed to acting in the best interests of the child so as to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people. The School requires everyone who comes into contact with children and their families to share this commitment. Interviews will be conducted in person, and they will explore candidates' suitability to work with children. Teaching Staff Salary Scale Jobs.ac.uk.
