Job summary The Respiratory Department is highly successful and nationally renowned. Each of the existing consultants has a strong general Respiratory background with subspecialty interests in lung cancer, mesothelioma, sleep disordered breathing, non-invasive ventilation, pulmonary physiology, interstitial lung disease, medical thoracoscopy, COPD and asthma. We have established EBUS, bronchoscopy and medical thoracoscopy services across the trust. Both Winchester and Basingstoke sites are supported by a visiting Thoracic surgeon. The post holder will be expected to support the existing respiratory outpatient services across our hospitals with a base at the Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital for inpatient services. Main duties of the job The post holder will be expected to cross cover clinics and other clinical procedures as well as supporting services across all Trust sites. On each site, in addition to the Consultant staff, there are currently two specialist registrars, two IMTs and two/three FY1's. Four/five respiratory nurse specialists are based on each site, covering lung cancer, sleep,tuberculosis, and airways disease services in addition to a specialist respiratory physiotherapist who provides sputum clearance and breathing pattern disorder clinics. The pulmonary physiology department offers basic and specialist tests including bronchial provocation and cardiopulmonary exercise testing. This post is for a twelve month fixed term contract, based at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital (RHCH). The hospital has 9 critical care beds used flexibly to admit both medical and surgical patients. No previous experience is required for these posts although some exposure to ICU, anaesthetics, acute medicine or medical simulation/education would be advantageous. The posts will provide excellent training and experience for post-foundation doctors planning careers in anaesthetics, medicine, critical care or surgery, or doctors with more significant experience preparing for specialty training. The ICU is a 9-bed unit, funded for caring for 4 level 2 (“HDU”) and 3 level 3 (“ICU”) patients. However, in keeping with recommended practice, the unit is flexible, in accepting varying ratios of the different levels of care, up to the capacity dictated by nursing numbers. The ICU is recognised for basic training, and can easily demonstrate compliance with recommended activity levels and educational supervision. This post is for a Clinical Fellow in Intensive Care with the option of including some responsibilities for training and education through simulation. The Respiratory Department is highly successful and nationally renowned. Each of the existing consultants has a strong general Respiratory background with subspecialty interests in lung cancer, mesothelioma, sleep disordered breathing, non-invasive ventilation, pulmonary physiology, interstitial lung disease, medical thoracoscopy, COPD and asthma. We have established EBUS, bronchoscopy and medical thoracoscopy services across the trust. Both Winchester and Basingstoke sites are supported by a visiting Thoracic surgeon. The post holder will be expected to support the existing respiratory outpatient services across our hospitals with a base at the Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital for inpatient services. The post holder will be expected to cross cover clinics and other clinical procedures as well as supporting services across all Trust sites. On each site, in addition to the Consultant staff, there are currently two specialist registrars, two IMTs and two/three FY1’s. Four/five respiratory nurse specialists are based on each site, covering lung cancer, sleep, tuberculosis, and airways disease services in addition to a specialist respiratory physiotherapist who provides sputum clearance and breathing pattern disorder clinics. The pulmonary physiology department offers basic and specialist tests including bronchial provocation and cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Bronchoscopy services are performed within our endoscopy unit, two list a week on each site. Facilities are available for x-ray screening. Medical thoracoscopy is performed in the Winchester site with plans to commence on the Basingstoke site imminently. Additional pleural procedure lists are conducted in the endoscopy twice weekly on the Winchester site. There is a fortnightly EBUS list on each site. The role will flex dependent on the needs of the service providing a balance of general administration, transcription, reception and other duties commensurate with the banding of the post in order that our patients have a high-quality patient pathway experience in line with NHS Constitutional Standards You will promote best practice, ensuring that administration is delivered to the standard the service expects, escalating issues and concerns as appropriate in a timely matter so as not to affect patient care.You will primarily be based at Royal Hampshire County Hospital.
